Red Sox Pitchers Stretching Spring Training Day 3.jpg

And we’re off!

A game for the Sox this spring against the Northeastern Eagles was a success.  The game was a step in the right direction for spring training, with a 15-0 win.  Even though it was short lived the seven strike out inning with two strikeouts for Casey Kelly was a great performance. In the hitting department Papi hit a two run homer in the fourth, which ended up being a six run inning for the Sox. I’m not sure if there is any negatives, pitching was great and clearly offense was on fire. Hopefully the Sox can keep there bats hot. Afterwards, the Sox went against Boston College with a score of 6-1, a win for Boston. Iglesias and Kalish two minor leaguers whom the club have high expectations for led the offense, Iglesais who hit a base clearing double and Kalish who did just a well with a single, walk and scoring twice. There’s no doubt that the Sox are, as of now, rolling along quite well in offense and defense. Hopefully, the Sox will keep it up for there game against the twins tomorrow night.  The game will be pitched by Beckett and an appearence by Papelbon and of course many of the other great pitchers in the pen.

Jason Bay (1).jpg

the one that got away

It has been awhile but I needed to give myself time to recoop from the loss of Jason Bay. The mets offered more money and more time and that’s all I’ll say the Mets got Bay we didn’t, end of story. Not only is Bay of the market but Holliday made a mega deal to stay with the Cardinals. Everytime a door closes a new one opens and in our case a few new doors have opened up.  The Sox aquired Adrian Beltre and last month Mark Cameron. Beltre a third baseman, last season hitting 265. AVG, 44 RBI, and 8 HR (career 250) the Sox and Beltre struck a one year deal with an option for a second.  With Beltre at third base Youk will get to stay at first where he has already won one gold glove (2007).  Center fieleder Mark Cameron hit 250. AVG, 70 RBIs and 24 HR in ’09 and with three gold gloves Cameron will take over center while Ellsbury goes to left.  So far the Sox have had a succesful offseason Scutaro, Lackey, Cameron and Beltre. Also the Sox are close to trading Kotchman to the Mariners for a minor and major league player and some cash. With the exciting offseanon the Sox are having I can only expect great for this season… and don’t worry only eighty-three more days unitl April 4th!

A busy week

Oh goodness, with the
good comes the bad and there is plenty of both.  I will start with a few
well-deserved congratulations.  Jacoby Ellsbury who was awarded
TYIB’s Defensive Player of the Year for the amazing work does in the outfield and
John Henry owner of the Sox, received the Corporate Citizenship Award by The Woodrow
Wilson International Center for Scholars. To state the most obvious news, John
Lackey will be with the Red Sox for five years! John Lackey pitching for the
Angels last season had a 3.83 ERA and was 11-8.  On, a darker note Lowell
is injured…again.  He will be needing surgery on his thumb, which means
the deal is off with the Texas Rangers. I must say the news that Lowell is
staying in Boston is good news to me, but the fact that he is once again
injured is terrible. Poor Lowell cannot catch a break it is always one injury
after another, but when uninjured Lowell is a huge factor in the Sox success.   Also, those Mets, uh those Mets, they
won’t give up on Bay and are going to put a five year contract (which is one
more year than Boston offered) on the table.  Boston needs to get aggressive the
Sox need Bay and I think Bay wants to be in Boston but not if he can get a better
deal elsewhere.  In the next few days deals with Bay will hopefully
be accomplished, and if all goes well he will end up back where he
belongs… in Boston!

Winter Meetings

As the winter meetings wrap up the news spreads around Boston about new players, lost players and players to be named later. Good news or bad news first, lets start on a high note.  When it comes to new players the Sox picked up Boof Bosner RHP from the Twins although he didn’t do well in Minnesota due to his injuries the Sox are expecting a turn around for Bosner in Boston.  Bad news, a trade for Lowell is brewing I do not want to see Lowell leave Boston he was a vital part of the 2007 world series win, and despite his injuries he was always effective when he wasn’t on the DL.  Yet, it looks like the guys in the front office disagree with me.  The Sox are on the verge of making a deal with the Rangers, Mike Lowell and some money would be on their way to Texas and on our end the Sox would get minor league catcher Max Ramirez. Yes, I see the logic in the proposal and its positive effects in the long run but that doesn’t mean that I have to like it…and I don’t.  When it comes to players (hopefully) to be named later, Bay is the first name that comes to mind for all Sox fans and for the Mets. Wait, what?!  Mets, Mets, METS! that’s right i said it, those God awful Mets want Jason Bay they made him an offer similar to the original offer proposed by the Sox.  Despite the Mets offer the Sox still aren’t backing off when it comes to Bay…and if worst comes to worst and Bay decides to stiff the Sox and go with the Mets the Sox would have to make a push for Holliday.  There really is no ‘short end of the stick’ in this situation.

Can you say Scutaro?

Finally, Pedroia won’t have to make the move to shortstop and with a two year deal with a vet like Marco Scutaro the infeild problem is virtually solved (knock on wood). Marco Scutaro playing for the Toronto Blue Jays last season hit a .282 BA, 12 HR and 60 RBIs the Soxs will also will be getting some help in the offence department not just defense when it comes to Scutaro, thank God. Starting Monday the winter meetings will officially begin! Who are the Sox going for? great question, but I do know who I want them to go for. I’m staying steady with my choice of Bay over Holliday even though I would welcome Holliday with open arms knowing what he could do for the offence, which needs alittle work and that’s no secret. I also wouldn’t mind a pitcher or two but we can get into that later… Back to the point welcome to Boston Marco! Maybe it won’t be a silent winter in Boston like the anaylists predicted.
